4.3 Cat lovers for Kerry

Cat lovers with allergies have something to look forward to with the announced development of a genetically engineered cat lacking its allergy-causing protein. This is just one trifling example of the many benefits—from hardier crops and healthier meats to life saving new vaccines—we stand to gain from genetic engineering. I was therefore pleased to see that according to the Times article the government has yet to find a pretext on which to step in and "regulate" (i.e., work to destroy) the company working to create the new cats.

But with the religionist takeover of the Republican party and it’s consistent program to destroy the first amendment separation of church and state, those who work to improve our lives through the new technologies of genetics can expect to be handed their walking papers—if George Bush with his "faith-based initiatives" is reelected.

The separation of religion and government is one of the primary foundations of a free society. John Kerry may not be the first choice for those who would defend our country against terrorists, but before we defend our nation, we must first ensure that ours remains a nation free enough to be worth defending.
