2.10.1 Most Influential Songs

Here is a self-portrait in song titles. I know it’s a bit of an adolescent thing to do, but i have noticed that people are always talking about their favorite songs and making lists and so-forth. Now what i got to thinking is that nobody includes all those Metallica songs that were their favorites back in junior high. They only include the songs that are currently their favorites.

Now, if you were really going to make a list, it ought to include all the songs that have ever had some kind of personal meaning—at any time in your life—even the bone-rendingly embarrassing ones. It should include the ones you hate now, or the ones that express sentiments you can’t stand, but you happened to hear a lot during some intense part of your life, and so now you associate it with that. Even if nobody else would possibly get the same thing out of it. In short, the list should be painfully honest.

Thankfully i’m not too embarrassed… but anyway, here it is: the 123 or so songs (i started meaning to do 100) that have had the most impact in my life, presented for no particular reason, in no particular order. I would like to A) order them by importance (i’ve started that—some of the most important are near the top) and B) i’d like to turn them all into links to amazon.com or some such.

A quick analysis shows a few things (exact numbers may vary):

1. I really like Bjork A lot.

2. I don’t think i’ve really thought of all the really important songs from when i was a lad. I know there were some. Maybe i’m too embarrassed to remember them. I’ll keep trying to think of them and adding them.

3. I also like Depeche Mode. And Freur.

4. If you get rid of all the main Bjork albums and the two main Depeche Mode albums and the two Freur albums you’re left with only 80 tracks (out of 125).

5. If you get rid of the rest of Bjork (including Sugarcubes) and the rest of Depeche Mode (and the Underworld song, which is latter-day Freur) you’re down to 65—about half.

6. This means the albums that have had the most influence on me are: Bjork—Homogenic, Verpertine, Debut; Depeche Mode—Catching Up With Depeche Mode; Freur—Get Us Out of Here, Doot-Doot. The surprise break-out hits are: The Cure—Disintegration (from the dark days of my youth) nd Goldfrapp—Felt Mountain.

So it’s official. My favorite rockers are: Bjork, Freur and Depeche Mode. Props to The Cure, Chemical Brothers, OMD without whom we are down to 48 songs by lots of whomever.
