4.11 Self-definition

Perhaps the element of ‘surrender’ to the universe that is reported to precede many intense religious experiences is really a healthy act of self-definition; if you are busy feeling that you are responsible for everything that happens, then the realization that if a meteor hits it really has nothing to do with you—that it’s not up to you—so there’s no point in worrying about it (thus defining where you end and the universe begins) can be an act of self-liberation.
